EASTTLE READING

We room 12 we have been testing our reading skills. We have been going on the Internet and doing easttl tests to see what we can achieve in our reading. We all got 3 mini tests which require a good amount of reading for each one. They have questions that relate to the story/text and when ur finished it gets marked and the teacher can see were we stand in our reading levels.

Term 1

Over the past term we covered a wide range of subjects and have done lots of activities. At the start of the term we investigated the Treaty of Waitangi for out topic. For PE we did athletics midway through the term and did lots f practise leading up to it. We have also done several science experiments where we had to think why things happened. For maths we did geometry which tied in in with our art work and patterns. All term we have been working on our wall of us and we have recently finished it. We have had a great start to the year and I can't wait for the rest.

RERE

At the end of last year we were introduced to Winton School's first mascot and four refined and updated values. Our new school values are Respect, Effort, Responsibility and Empathy. Put those all together and you get REREThat is the name of our new school mascot: RERE the tui. He all encourages us to live by the values at school so we can learn more. Every one in the school loves RERE and he is going to make a difference.

Science With Mrs Collet

In science we have been observing how to tell the difference between a boiled egg and a raw egg without opening it. We came up with ways that we could tell the difference between them, so we tried  spinning the eggs on the desk and one of them would spin more than the other and most people thought that the boiled egg spun the most and the raw egg didn't. This happened because the yolk in side the egg was moving around causing the egg to tip to one side and stop spinning where as with the boiled one it had been cooked and the yolk went firm so there wasn't yolk going everywhere inside the egg.

Another observation we did was we got four different coloured M and Ms and a plate of water. What we did was placed the four M and Ms in four different spots on the plate and waited for a minute. After a minute we looked at them and all of the dye had started coming out of them, after a while all of the dye that had come out of them had made quarters of the colour that the M and Ms were so the plate was filled with colour. Soon Mrs Collet came around and placed a different coloured one right in the middle of the plate so when that spread it mixed with other colours. Also the white shell started flaking off and just floating  on top of the water and the coloured dye was at the bottom of the water. Mrs Collet asked us why we thought this happened and we thought it was because the dye was more dense than the water.

New Zealand Flag

In the middle of term one Room 12 made a wall called 'Our Choice'. It is about wether we wanted to change the current to the the new flag or to keep the current flag.We wrote down on yellow paper our choices about changing the flag or keeping it and we had to explain why we made the choice we did. We also did some research about the new and old flag and also what the symbols meant. For some people including me it was a difficult decision but for others it was pretty easy to decide. Some people got into groups and wrote about the flags New Zealand has had in the past.

Tino Rangatiratanga

Tino Rangatiratanga

Over the past couple of weeks Room 12 have been finding out information about our chosen New Zealand leaders. Some have written and studied about famous sports people like Richie McCaw and Brendan McCallum and others are doing people like Sir Peter Blake, Burt Munro and even John Key. In our presentation we had to include a few of these things: what they said or wrote - their language is a treasure. Good deeds, awards, honours bestowed upon them and their accomplishments. Before we started we had to write ten or more questions in our book and then had to use the internet or other sources to answer them. We had to have a bibliography and record all the things we used to get the information we were going to use in our writing so that would mean book names, authors, year it was published, web address and more. After we had finished our draft in our books we could choose a way we were going to present it. Some like me did a poster or wall chart and others did something on the computers and we could also present our writing with an info box, book and more. We all choose different leaders but all of them were/are great and we learnt alot learning about them.
